Community partnership for the neighbourhood of North Prospect in Plymouth
North Prospect Partnership is the community partnership for the neighbourhood of North Prospect in Plymouth, UK.
Formed in 2003, as the principal recommendation of an Audit and Action Plan undertaken by Flying Giraffe Consultancy from Iron Gate in Derby, North Prospect Partnership's role is to: “Improve the quality of life for all who live and work in North Prospect”
This is achieved through engaging residents and the groups, organisations and agencies who serve the neighbourhood, to address issues which inhibit quality of life.
North Prospect Partnership is a membership organisation and is only as strong as its membership. Membership is open to residents, workers, well wishers and organisations who serve the neighbourhood.
North Prospect is a housing estate built between the two world wars. An estate built as “Homes fit for heroes”, it remained in local authority ownership until 3 years ago when Plymouth's public housing stock transferred to a new housing association, Plymouth Community Homes. North Prospect was built as a garden suburb and it was a pioneering model for its time.
Since the 1950’s, the estate has gradually declined and the neighbourhood is classified nationally as in the top 3% of deprived neighbourhoods in the country. National performance indicators show that in many areas, such as education, health, adult skills, literacy and numeracy, unemployment and community safety, North Prospect lags behind the rest of the city and the UK as a whole.
Much of the housing on the estate, which is now over 80 years old, is in need of structural repair and substantial refurbishment. This has led to a major 10 year Regeneration Programme, which will see old housing being demolished and replaced with new housing. Whilst this is a renaissance for the neighbourhood, it deeply affects residents, some of whom have been here for three generations. Whilst the neighbourhood has a tarnished image, there is a strong sense of community and love for the neighbourhood. Many people welcome the imminent change, however, this is not without trauma and unsettlement.
